In the honor of the 30th anniversary of the re-establishment of full diplomatic relations between Latvia and the United States of America and the establishment of Riga Business School at Riga Technical University, the U.S. Embassy in Latvia and RBS long to reminisce the joint accomplishments of the successful cooperation, organizing the competition for the generation which will take over the responsibility of strengthening the ties between the United States and Latvia in the future.

2021 marks the 30 years anniversary since the reestablishment of full diplomatic relations between Latvia and the United States of America, and the establishment of Riga Business School at Riga Technical University. The 30 years have been underpinned by open experience and knowledge sharing benefitting societies, businesses, and individuals on both sides of the ocean. Today’s realities, perhaps, more than before, require further development of the understanding of shared values, operational principles, and inherited capabilities. In addition, that should be accomplished using innovative means and approaches.

By building on 30 years of experience the U.S. Embassy in Latvia and RBS will join efforts to review the foundations for successful cooperation, past events and accomplishments, and the avenues for future cooperation. The findings will be shared with society through an innovative live-streamed virtual competition for high school students. The competition will take place during Spring of 2021 and will lead up to the Grand Finale event (date TBC). This will be the main public event for the U.S. Embassy and RBS to demonstrate the bilateral accomplishments of Latvia and the U.S. during the last 30 years (and during the last 100 years since the establishment of U.S. – Latvia diplomatic relations in 1922) and to inspire young people for further global endeavors.

Competition

The uniqueness and innovation of this competition lie in the combination of multiple factors – rich educational content in the English language and a mix of technologies used together to ensure real-time online competition. To participate in the competition, participants will need: 1) a computer to watch the live stream, 2) a smartphone for submitting answers.

The competition will be a multi-stage tournament-style live-streamed countrywide quiz competition for high schoolers in English. Each competition consists of 5 rounds, 6 questions per category. After each match, the results will be posted on a web page designed for this event only, so participants could follow their progress. The top 25 participants (five from each region of Latvia) will compete live in the semifinals, then the top 5 contestants (one from each region of Latvia) will be invited to the finals.

The competition will be hosted by a live presenter, a U.S. Community representative, and supported by a virtual assistant. To encourage communication and networking among the participants, the platform has a built-in chatbox.

The competition will be launched on October 9, 2021, and will lead up to the Grand Finale on November 6, 2021. The competition will take place online every Saturday from 11 AM to 12 PM EET from October 9 to November 6, 2021. The Grand Finale event is on November 6, 2021.
